A petition signed by 755 people opposing Burien's proposed North of NERA (Cedarhurst) Neighborhood Business rezone has been added to the Burien Planning Commission's July 8 agenda packet ahead of next week's public hearing.

Before the public hearing, the City of Burien will host a second virtual walkthrough of the proposed code amendments on Tuesday, July 7, at 6 p.m. via Zoom.

The petition, organized through by Cedarhurst Neighborhood Coalition, was submitted as written public testimony to the Burien City Clerk, Planning Commission, and City Council.

According to the cover letter, 755 people signed the petition opposing the proposed rezoning. Of those, 287 identified themselves as Burien residents or property owners, and 13 submitted written comments expressing their opposition.

Following the June 29 Burien council briefing, one organizer said she had hoped for "more empathy" and "more curiosity" from councilmembers about how the proposal could affect Cedarhurst residents.

The proposed North of NERA Neighborhood Business rezone would change zoning and development regulations in Burien's Cedarhurst neighborhood. The proposal has generated extensive public discussion, with supporters saying it would expand neighborhood business opportunities and opponents expressing concerns about potential impacts on existing homes, property rights, and the character of the neighborhood.

One of the petition signers stated, "We’ve lived here for more than 10 years and built our own home, and for our property we could not find another house with as much space that we need for our big family with the value we would get out of our house... - Tyler"

Before the public hearing, the City of Burien will host a second virtual walkthrough of the proposed code amendments on Tuesday, July 7, at 6 p.m. via Zoom. The City added the second session after the original July 1 walkthrough conflicted with the U.S. Men's National Team's World Cup match.

The Burien Planning Commission will hold its public hearing on Wednesday, July 8, when commissioners will receive public testimony before making a recommendation to the Burien City Council. The draft code will be published as part of the Planning Commission packet ahead of the meeting.
