Burien, WA — Burien C.A.R.E.S. Animal Shelter reported extensive damage to two of its service vehicles early Saturday morning, describing the incident as a targeted act of vandalism.
In a Facebook post published November 1, the nonprofit stated that five tires were slashed, three sets of windows were broken, and a large exterior mirror was destroyed on both a shelter truck and van. The organization said the damage appeared deliberate and not random.
According to the post, security video of the incident has been turned over to Burien Police, and an investigation is underway. The shelter asked anyone with information to contact C.A.R.E.S. at buriencares@gmail.com or Burien Police at 206-477-2200.
Just two weeks ago, questions were raised at the October 20 Burien City Council meeting, where multiple public commenters called for greater transparency from city-funded contractors. The vandalism closely follows that public demand for accountability. In its Facebook post, C.A.R.E.S. wrote, “Why would anyone target a small non-profit that’s here to help animals and do good in this community? Who could be so heartless?”
Burien C.A.R.E.S. serves as the City of Burien’s animal shelter and a 501(c)(3) nonprofit providing rescue, adoption services, and lost-and-found support. The organization relies on donations and community support to fund operations and veterinary care. Staff said the damage will be costly to repair and could divert resources normally used for animal services.
For those asking how they can help, the shelter directed supporters to make donations through its website at www.buriencares.org.
“This kind of targeted destruction has no place in our community,” the post said, thanking residents who have expressed concern and offered assistance.
