Burien City Councilmember Alex Andrade has announced she is running for the Washington State House of Representatives in the 33rd Legislative District, Position 2, a seat currently held by Mia Gregerson.
The announcement came in a campaign press release Wednesday. Andrade, a lifelong Democrat, small business owner, and longtime community volunteer, said she is running to ensure local communities are represented in Olympia and that state policies work effectively for cities and families.
“Since 2024, I’ve had the privilege of serving our community on the Burien City Council, where decisions made in Olympia quickly become real-world challenges for our cities,” Andrade said. “We need leadership that understands how state policy impacts local communities and economies and is committed to balanced, responsible solutions. Our cities deserve a stronger voice in Olympia when state policies directly affect our neighborhoods and businesses. That’s why I’m running.”
According to the campaign announcement, Andrade has focused on strengthening public safety, supporting local businesses, and addressing homelessness, behavioral health, and addiction challenges during her time on the council.
“Addressing our region’s mental health and substance abuse crises requires real partnership between cities, counties, and the state,” Andrade said. “We need solutions that help people access treatment and recovery while also ensuring our communities remain safe and stable.”
The 33rd Legislative District includes Burien, Normandy Park, SeaTac, Des Moines, and parts of Kent, Tukwila, and Renton.
According to the campaign release, Andrade is a Latina, member of the LGBTQ+ community, and mother of two adult children. She is a small business owner and community volunteer active in civic and cultural events in the Burien area.
The release also states she serves on several regional policy and community boards, including the board of SOMOS Seattle / Seattle Latinx Pride. Within the City of Burien, she has been appointed to the Immigrant Affairs subcommittee, co-leads a committee working on animal care and control policy, and volunteers at Burien’s local animal shelter.
