The Des Moines Historical Society will host a free public program exploring the fascinating history of Seattle-Tacoma International Airport on Wednesday, November 19 at 7 p.m.
The event is free and open to the public.
Featured speakers Devlin Donnelly, Port of Seattle Creative Services Manager, and Marco Milanese, Aviation Division Community Relations Manager, will present a one-hour look at Sea-Tac’s past, present, and future. Guests will learn why the airport was built at Bow Lake, what Tacoma and Pierce County contributed to the project, the story behind the crosswind runways, and how aviation has changed over the decades.
The program will highlight the airlines that shaped Sea-Tac from its earliest days— including Northwest Airlines, Western Airlines, and Pan American World Airways (Pan Am)—and how today’s leading carriers such as Alaska Airlines and Delta Air Lines have turned SEA into a major West Coast hub.
Guests will also hear about the airport’s brief 1983 renaming in honor of Sen. Henry “Scoop” Jackson, the construction of the parking garage and underground subway in the early 1970s, the arrival of light rail service, and what’s planned for future airport expansion.
