The future of The New Start Community Garden, also known as The Shark Garden, may depend on community feedback submitted before March 1.

Organizers posted a public appeal this week saying, “We need your help.”

The Highline School District is considering moving Cascade Middle School onto the adjacent campus, a plan that would involve tearing down existing structures and constructing a new school.

Supporters say they welcome a school returning to the site.

However, they say some members of the planning committee have indicated the garden “would have to be removed.”

Garden supporters also spoke during public comment at the Burien City Council meeting on February 23, urging residents to weigh in.

What Is The Shark Garden?

The New Start Community Garden is a nonprofit school, community, and botanical teaching garden.

It serves multiple roles:

  • A school garden growing organic produce for the White Center Food Bank
  • A volunteer-supported community p-patch program
  • A botanical garden focused on food plants, pollinator habitat, and drought-tolerant landscaping
  • An outdoor classroom teaching food gardening, science, art, cooking, and environmental education

During the growing season, the garden offers free Saturday classes in organic gardening, cooking, and environmental science. Registration is required.

The site also features:

  • A self-guided art walk along the fences
  • Interpretive educational signage throughout
  • Year-round public access during daylight hours

Smoking, pets, and picking are not allowed.

Supporters say the garden provides districtwide educational benefits and have cited statistics they believe demonstrate its impact.

Organizers are also working to arrange a tour for planning committee members.

Survey Open Through March 1

The district has opened a one-week public survey through ThoughtExchange.

Responses are limited to 150 characters.

What You Can Do

  • Complete the survey before March 1
  • Ask planners to incorporate the garden into redevelopment designs
  • Share the link with others

The comment window is brief. The decision could shape the site for years to come.
