Des Moines residents are invited to learn more about the city budget and share their priorities during a Budget Town Hall on Tuesday, Aug. 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Des Moines Activity Center, 2045 S. 216th St.

The City of Des Moines develops a new budget every two years, determining how money will be spent on city services, programs and other priorities. The town hall gives residents an opportunity to weigh in early, before final decisions are made on the 2027-2028 budget.

City staff will explain how the budget process works, host small-group discussions and hold a department open house where residents can ask questions. Bingo and prizes will also be part of the evening.

City Council Budget Priorities

During an Aug. 6 study session, the Des Moines City Council identified four primary priorities for the upcoming budget:

  • The Marina's future — determining long-term plans for the Marina, including needed repairs and improvements, future land use and its role in the community and local economy.
  • Easier permitting — making the permitting process simpler and faster for businesses and developers looking to invest in Des Moines.
  • Stronger financial reserves — increasing city savings to better prepare for unexpected expenses and economic uncertainty.
  • Public safety staffing — making sure police and other public safety services have enough staffing and resources to meet community needs.

Councilmembers also discussed improving city technology systems and increasing the city's capacity for community engagement and public communications.

City staff are expected to develop preliminary budget numbers and return to the Council for further discussion at a Sept. 12 workshop.
