Editor's Note: We strive to connect our community in meaningful ways and love to promote free meetings that connect families and communities together through gathering and sharing of resources.

Invitation from Guest Writer Lauren Schmidt, Highline Parent

This is an invitation to all Highline families and community members interested in coming together to discuss the main educational topics in our schools (literacy, tech, and math). We are forming an independent parent coalition focused on three main goals:

  • Connecting families who share an interest in evidence-based instruction.
  • Learning together about educational research and best practices.
  • Collaborating to support and advocate for strong instructional practices in our district.
First Meeting - May 9
When: Saturday, May 9, at 3:00 p.m.
Where: Tukwila Library Meeting Room

We hope to meet families from across the district - including those with students in Elementary, Middle, and High School. Community members, teachers, and staff are also very welcome to attend.

Our first meeting will focus on introductions and sharing the issues and priorities that are most important to our families. This is a family-friendly event; students and children are welcome to attend and utilize the library resources during our discussion.

If you are unable to attend and/or would like to continue to receive periodic email updates, please fill out our Contact Form.

About the Organizer: This coalition is being organized by Lauren Schmidt, a Highline elementary parent and literacy advocate. Lauren’s interest in this work grew from her experience filing a formal Instructional Materials Complaint last fall regarding the use of three-cueing in the district’s K-5 ELA program.
