The City of Burien has appointed a new interim city manager, with veteran municipal leader Bob Larson set to begin April 28.
The Burien City Council voted April 20 to bring Larson into the role following recent leadership changes at City Hall. He will step in after a long career in local government, including prior service with the cities of Snoqualmie and Gig Harbor before retiring in 2021.
Since retiring, Larson has continued working in interim roles, most recently serving the cities of Newcastle and North Bend.
“I am excited to join the Burien city organization at this pivotal time to support Mayor Moore, Deputy Mayor Garcia and the city council,” Larson said in the city’s announcement. “I’m looking forward to working with the staff leadership team pursuing and achieving council’s objectives.”
Larson brings decades of experience dating back to 1986, along with leadership roles across regional organizations. He is a past president of the Washington City-County Manager Association and has served on the boards of the Association of Washington Cities, Sound Cities Association, and NORCOM.
He holds both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in urban and regional studies, with an emphasis in city management.
In the interim, Public Works Director Rod Steitzer will continue serving as acting city manager until Larson officially assumes the position.
Larson’s arrival comes as Burien navigates a period of transition, with city leadership emphasizing continuity in operations and support for council priorities.
